This 12 ga. double has J. Manton engraved on the locks. The mountings and wood quality would indicate that this was a higher grade gun. The barrels have only provisional proof marks and no gauge stamp. This is usually indicative of an export gun, which never underwent final proofing and stamping. There were a number of American merchants that imported these gun for sale to the U.S. market, including James Bown, Homer Fisher, and others. It is probably a later gun. This gun is available as a collector gun only for $850.00.

Note the replaced hammer screw. Again, this is an old repair.

This trigger guard is a replacement from another Manton gun. The original was broken in several pieces.

An interesting little toe box which was used to contain a cleaning worm.

The patina has been removed from the barrels as they were in the process of being re-browned to bring out the fine twist pattern. This service is available for an additional $200.

The ribs are solid with the exception of a couple of small areas on the bottom. The bores are rough, but not to the extent that they could be polished out and the gun made into a shooter with light loads AFTER RE-PROOFING. They should be examined by a knowledgeable BLACK POWDER GUNSMITH, as most modern gunsmiths know very little about these old guns.
